A closer look

The S is the odd one out here. Every other character in this set is built from straight strokes and right angles; this one is two opposed curves, and it behaves differently on a wall because of it. Curved cut metal catches light along the whole inside of each bend rather than at a single edge, so the letter looks softer and slightly larger than its 12.6 inches suggest.

  • A curve reads bigger than it measures

    Because there is no flat side, the S occupies its bounding box more completely than an I or an L does. If you are choosing between initials for the same spot, assume the S will feel about a size up from the straight-sided letters.

  • Centering is easier, leveling is harder

    There is no baseline stroke to sight along, so the usual trick of lining the bottom edge up with a shelf does not work. Find the vertical center of the letter, mark the wall, and check it with a level held across the widest part of both curves.

  • Serif curves need clean paint behind

    The openings inside an S are narrow and tapered. On a textured or patterned wall those gaps fill up visually and the letter turns into a blob at any distance. Flat paint keeps the counters open.
