A closer look

Gold cut of the same four-panel lotus, 47 by 17 inches once arranged. Line drawings at this width are unusually dependent on finish, because the eye has to follow a stroke across nearly four feet and lose it nowhere. Gold gives that stroke its own brightness instead of borrowing contrast from the paint, which is why it holds together on walls where the black version breaks up.     The drawing only works if you can trace it from end to end. Gold keeps the stroke visible under uneven lighting, which a four-foot span almost always has — one end nearer a window or a lamp than the other.
