A closer look

This is a strip rather than a panel: eleven letters cut from sheet metal and held in one line, 18.1 inches wide and 2.4 inches from the top of the tallest letter to the bottom of the lowest. It was drawn as a Halloween piece and it does the job, but the joke reads all year over a doorway that people leave through more often than they arrive through. Black on a pale frame is the version with the most contrast.

  • A shape that only works above something

    Anything 18 inches long and 2 inches tall has no presence on open wall — it looks like a line someone drew and forgot. Put it where the proportion has a job: over a door frame, along the top of a mirror, on the lintel of a pass-through. The strip borrows the width of whatever it sits on.

  • Cut letters, not printed ones

    The words are openings in the metal, so the wall behind becomes the letter fill. Over white trim the phrase is crisp; over a dark hallway it goes almost invisible until you stand under it. That is the difference between this and a printed sign, and it is worth checking what is behind before you fix it.

    The listing puts it at 5.6 ounces. Nothing at that weight needs an anchor in the plaster, and nothing at that weight leaves much of a mark if you move it a few inches once you have seen it up. Trial it with a piece of tape before anything permanent.

    The maker lists it for indoor and outdoor use, which is fair for a coated steel strip under a porch roof. Full weather is a different question: no painted metal at this price is a marine finish, and a west-facing wall in a wet winter will find the edges first.
